BMP Foundation Underwrites New Eye Equipment, Lactation Training
Initiative
OPTHALMOLOGY ENHANCEMENTS
Brome-Missisquoi ophthalmology patients are now benefiting
from a new retinal camera, thanks to a $45,000 investment from the BMP Foundation. “This is
key diagnostic technology for photographing the optic nerve and the retina. Its digital
capabilities also enable us to more accurately chart the progression of various conditions which is
key in the earlier detection of diabetic disease and glaucoma, amongst other conditions,”
explains Dr. Charles Weldon. Dr Weldon and fellow BMP Ophthalmologist Dr Michel Gosselin foresee
using this equipment in as many as 1000 examinations in the coming year. The Foundation thanks the
BMP Auxiliary in particular for their support in this project. The Auxiliary donated $5000 to the
Foundation towards this equipment purchase at their recent Spring Tea.
LACTATION INITIATIVES
The Foundation is also pleased to play a key partnership
role in funding an innovative health initiative for Brome-Missisquoi women and children.
Long recognized as a benchmark centre in the promotion of breastfeeding
amongst mothers and young infants, the BMP Hospital has hosted visitors from over 50
establishments in the past five years. These visitors have learned from both our programs and our
approach. Levels of breast feeding [both on-site at the Hospital and during a child's first week of
life] are among the highest in Canada. The longer infants nurse, the greater the long-term health
benefits for both mother and child.
Unfortunately, many hurdles get in the way, causing mothers to discontinue
nursing earlier than is necessary.... ability, beliefs and preconceptions, return to the workplace,
family support, personal health issues, etc. The goal of this new initiative is to develop and
train a team of certified lactation consultants who can help new mothers and families extend the
period of time during which they will continue to nurse.
Under the new program, the CSSS La Pommeraie has formed a seven person team
which is undergoing extensive training for a year in order that each may be certified to become a
member of the International Board of Lactation Consultants and Examiners in July, 2007.
The team, which includes four nurses from the CLSC and BMP, as well as three physicians from local
medical practices across the region, will play a key support role in pre-natal training and
post-natal visits. They will also be available both on-site at the Birthing Pavilion itself and at
private clinics within the region.
The cost of the program, a $35,000 investment, is being funded by the BMP
Foundation. By supporting this program, the Foundation is funding a concrete step in supporting
the health and development of the women and children of this area. As well, it is also proudly
helping to reinforce and build upon the leadership position which the CSSS La Pommeraie currently
holds in this important area.
