Walk to Fight all Cancers 2024

We are delighted to announce the return of the Walk to Fight all Cancers to the benefit of the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation, an event organized by the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club.

For the 23rd edition, we look forward to seeing you at the Lac Brome Community Centre on Sunday, October 6, 2024, as of 9:30 a.m. The proceeds will be used to renew medical equipment specialized in the treatment of cancer patients at the BMP Hospital.

We would like to thank the honorary copresidents for holding dear the cause of the Walk to Fight All Cancers 2024: Dre Christine Cadrin, gynecologist at BMP Hospital and cancer survivor, and Heather Padner, major collaborator of the Walk.

Over the past twenty one years, I have raised $68,826 for the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club’s Walk to fight all cancers.  Goodness knows how many kilometers I have covered since that first walk in 2002, then organized by Brome Lake Fitness owners Pat Duncan and Janet Gibbons.  As a local resident and a Townshipper born and bred, I am only too happy to help raise money for the BMP, our local hospital.  I am committed to this community and am proud to participate in this Optimist Club initiative. Before each of the annual walks, I reach out to my very generous sponsors, all forty seven of them!  If I don’t call them, they call me.  Over the years, I have been truly touched by their support and I want to thank each and every one of them.  With the twenty second walk approaching in October, get ready to take my call!
– Heather Padner, major collaborator of the Walk

Thank you also to the two Walk co-organizers, Ms. Lucy Davis and Ms. Judy Henderson of the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club.

Thank you also to the partners and sponsors of the 2024 Walk for their commitment to the cause: Pharmacie Jean Coutu Julie Coderre, Sabrina Parent et Olivier Martel, Virgin Hill Coffee Roasters and MNP.

Project funded

The funds raised from the walk will be used to purchase specialized medical equipment for the treatment of cancer patients at BMP Hospital. Thanks to the contribution of the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club and it’s 2023 Walk to Fight All Cancers, two new colonoscopy machines valued at $92 800 have already been funded.

We wish to pursue the development of the endoscopy services provided at the BMP Hospital Surgical Outpatient Clinic by opening a second digestive endoscopy room. This new room will help improve the flow of services to reduce waiting lists and out-of-time patients. This project will require a second endoscopy tower, a free-standing screen, the purchase of 5 new endoscopes and an increase in the number of scopes of different sizes to meet customer needs, as well as cautery and other instruments.

Reducing the waiting list for patients undergoing digestive endoscopy, as well as detecting cancer early and preventively, will help reduce hospitalizations, complications, and tertiary and quaternary care appointments on hold. This entire project represents an investment of over $780,000 over the next few years.
